Sunglasses Photo Shoot

Silas grabbed Julia's sunglasses when I got home from work tonight, so we had a little photo shoot :) We are so glad Tia Julia is back from her trip to the D.R.!!!

Surviving the Storm

After a lot of media hoopla we ended up being largely unaffected by Irene in our neck of the woods. I know that several of my FB friends had problems with losing power and downed trees, so I hate to be glib. However, this post could alternatively be called, "What Hurricane?" or "Why Did We Have to Stay Inside All Day?". In anticipation of the storm, the prospect of being locked in with the kids for 1+ days was a little dreadful. All in all we had a fun day, though! Amidst our busy and fun summer, I guess it's not necessarily a bad thing to have a take-it-easy, stay in your jammies kind of Sunday... In the morning my storm-watching husband took the kids on the back deck to check out the weather. Silas hid behind Derek's legs while Zoe relished in feeling the wind and rain on her face. We had fun with a hurricane-inspired art project that involved colored paper, sidewalk chalk and crayons. We made lots of music, This also involved putting a pla

ICA Play Date

On the last Saturday of every month the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston hosts a free "play date" for families . I've had this event on my radar for quite some time, and we decided to go on Saturday before the storm hit. Going to museums is not something we get to do much of these days. S&Z have a 60-90 minute attention span for pretty much all activities at this age, so it seems pointless to spend a lot of $$ on things that we can't spend more than an hour attending. This was the perfect way to check out some amazing exhibits at the ICA, as well as enjoy the museum's prime location on the Boston Waterfront. We were able to enjoy 2 of the 4 exhibits currently showing at the ICA. The first was "The Record: Contemporary ART and VINYL" . It was amazing, in particular since Derek is a musician! There were plenty of multimedia components, which kept this exhibit more interesting for Zoe and Silas. The best part was a mediatechque room with

Preparing for a Hurricane

It's been a big week on the East Coast! On Tuesday we felt tremors resulting from an earthquake that originated in Virginia. Our lab is located on the 6th floor and we all felt the building shaking. After hanging out under doorways for a few minutes, we self-evacuated (which is apparently NOT what you're supposed to do in an earthquake). Hospital security and engineering came over and checked for structural and electrical damage before we were allowed back in the building 45 minutes later. This weekend Hurricane Irene is making her way up the eastern seaboard. We got groceries yesterday and have dug out flashlights, batteries and candles. I'm making a run to Toys 'R Us this afternoon to pick up stuff for a hurricane art project. After enjoying so much lovely time outside this summer, I am dreading being shut in for 24-36 hours once the storm hits. Derek works Saturday night and Sunday night - I would feel much better if he were home safe with us. But, I've liv

Friends at the Farm

Derek & I have wanted to go back to Drumlin Farm since becoming Mass Audobon members this summer. The forecast looked good for this weekend so we made plans to go this morning. We love this place so much that I decided to invite a couple of friends who have never been there. Timery & Jason (15 months old) made the drive over from Ipswich and Iris, Steve & Peter (13 months old) came from Cambridge. I had a playdate with Wendy, Sydney & Ivy yesterday and they decided to join us too! I have worked really hard to create a great circle of mom friends, but unfortunately most of them don't know each other. I have often thought that Timery & Iris would get along, and Wendy has been a close friend since the kids were born, so I was excited to finally get them all together! L-R: Steve, Iris & Peter (in arms); Dave, Ivy (in arms), Wendy & Sydney (in arms); me, Zoe & Silas (in stroller); Timery & Jason (in stroller) In total, there were 7 adults
