Day 143- Children's Museum

5/24/13: During the month of May admission to the Boston Children's Museum is free for families of first responders. It was a rainy, dreary week so we decided to take advantage of the offer and head to the museum on Friday morning. All Derek had to do was show his BEMS badge and id and all 4 of us got in for free. First we hit the "Arthur" exhibit, Of course we had to stop at the school bus in the Countdown to Kindergarten room. And then we headed to "Peep's World". Watching S&Z explore the water and bubbles this visit was awesome. They are really trying to figure out properties of the various media!    We stopped at the cafeteria for lunch, and then we headed to the kinetics room. Another fun day spent at a local museum, and the best part was that it was FREE!

Back to the Science Museum

After a family trip to the Science Museum was foiled by sickness back in November, we finally reserved library passes for this weekend. Derek has really fond memories of going there as a kid, so I think he was just as excited to go as S&Z were! Zoe & I had so much fun when we visited a few months ago that I couldn't wait to go back with both kids. I wasn't particularly interested in science classes growing up, but I have ended up with a research career in neuroscience. I adore watching S&Z explore the exhibits at the museum and seeing what kinds of things interest them the most. I am brainstorming more ways to expose them to science stuff as they get older. Microscopes Solar power Locomotion That's right. Breast imaging. Dinosaurs This guy hails from North Dakota!! Sound and frequency The biggest accomplishment of this visit was that Derek got Zoe to sit through the entire Lightning Show with him. She is really sensitive to l...

11/30/12: Checking out the goliath groupers at the Aquarium .

The VIP Visits the Aquarium

The VIP weeks at school have been such a great way to give some individual attention to S&Z. It can be hard to have your own spotlight as a twin, so I have loved seeing each of them shine on their own (although the other kid is never far away!). I had reserved some museum passes from the library last month and it just so happened that the Science Museum passes  coincided with the Friday of Zoe's VIP week and the Aquarium passes were reserved for the Friday of Silas' VIP week. All of us have been excited to visit Aquarium and today was finally the day! It was COLD along the Harbor this morning, but the kids were so excited to see the water! We were welcomed at the entrance of the Aquarium by the sea lions. The kids were so funny, I had to shoot a little video. We headed straight to the touch tanks once we got inside. We spent some time with the jellyfish, which is one of my favorite exhibits. And we got up close to one of the turtles. ...

Zoe & Mommy Day

A few weeks ago I reserved passes to the Science Museum as a fun way to end Zoe's VIP week. We've been talking about the museum all week, so it was such a bummer when Silas came down with a nasty cold+cough that necessitated his being seen by the doctor before the start of the weekend. Derek and I went back and forth about whether all of us should skip the museum, or if I should take Zoe without them. We opted for the latter, and Derek pulled one of the carseats out of the van so that he could take Silas to the doctor in the little car (we realized this weekend that it would be helpful to have a spare carseat installed in the little car so that we can split up once in awhile). Silas was SUCH A TROOPER about missing out on the museum. [And let me say that if the opposite situation had occurred I am fairly certain that no one would have been going to the museum, because it just wouldn't have been worth it]. Derek took Silas out for ice cream after his appointment (it ended ...
