15 Month Stats

We had Silas & Zoe's 15-month well baby visit with the pediatrician on Friday morning. I have come to dread these visits. Up until recently there has usually been some area of development that I have been worried about. Following a few of these appointments we have ended up with referrals to various specialists or we end up going over results of tests that have been done. In the last year we have been referred to genetics, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and neurology. On top of that additional stress, the well baby visits usually last 2+ hours and the kids always get shots. Now that Zoe and Silas are moving around so much, it's tough to have us all locked in a small exam room for so long. The drill has been that the nurse assistant comes in, we strip them down, and heights and weights are checked. The kids stay stripped down to their diaper until Dr. Rundquist comes in for the exam. The exams take a long time, because there's lots to discuss and check with two kids. After the exam is done, we wait again, sometimes for another 30 minutes, for the nurse to come in with the vaccines. We leave in a rush with two screaming, miserable babies. The rest of the day is typically a wash following these appointments.

Friday's visit was different. We got a bunch of snow overnight and the staff were surprised that we showed up for the visit (we were even 15 minutes early for an 8:30 appt time!). Zoe and Silas LOVED playing in the waiting room!

Now that they are "big kids", they no longer have to get undressed for height and weight. They are able to stand up on the scale to get weighed, and we only had to remove their shoes to check their height.

Here are the current stats, the percentiles are for their uncorrected age. If you take into account the fact that they were a month premature, Silas would be off the charts for height.

SILAS:
33.5" tall (96th percentile)
27.2 pounds (81st percentile)

ZOE:
32.25" tall (91st percentile)
25 pounds (79th percentile)

It's hard to believe there is only 1 inch and 2 pounds separating them now. At one point Zoe weighed 12 pounds and Silas was 16! Li'l sis is definitely catching up to her big bro :)

The wait time between each stage of this visit was much faster than it's ever been. We didn't have any concerns to talk to Dr. Rundquist about, so that felt really good too.  As always, the shots were miserable (Silas even bled on his shirt), but by the time lunch came around they were back to their happy-go-lucky selves.

The well baby visits become less frequent now, and it feels so good that they are solidly on the right track. The first year for a premature twin can be pretty rough, but I think we've finally made it to the other side!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Parks

We decided to get Zoe's haircut on Saturday morning at a place geared towards kids called Snip-Its . Neither Derek nor I anticipated what a meltdown Zoe was going to have. The haircut is half-assed at best and Derek will have to fix it when she's more calm. We were so traumatized that we headed to the park to get the day going on a better foot! We went back to Larz Anderson, the park where the  Psychiatry picnic was held on Thursday . It is really close to our house and is lovely and shaded. I think it's one of my new favorite spots! The kids like it too :) S&Z love playing with wood chips, so there was a lot of that! Snacks were enjoyed on the bench and I tried to get a few pictures of the haircut... Excuse me, I'm chewing pretzels :) This morning we met up with Wendy, Dave, Sydney & Ivy at the Newton Center Playground. It was HOT HOT HOT, and there wasn't too much shade. The kids have inherited my low tolerance for heat, so they spe

Sickness Update

We saw the pediatrician again this morning - it was our 4th visit in as many weeks. Both kids have an antibiotic-resistant sinus infection. Zoe also still has an ear infection after 5 days of meds; thankfully Silas' double ear infection is finally gone after the 10-day round of amoxicillin. While in the waiting room, we noticed that a rash had appeared on Silas' arms and trunk. Since this coincided with being on meds, Dr. Rundquist had to assume it might have been related to the amoxicillin. Silas was going to get a non-amox antibiotic for the continued sinus infection, and because it's easier to have them on the same meds they were both prescribed Suprax. Silas' O2 saturation was also down a little and he was wheezing during the exam. Apparently he also has broncholitis and he'll be treated with albuterol. He was given a nebulizer treatment in the doctor's office that he tolerated amazingly well at the end of a very long doctor's visit (we were there for 2
