CSA - Week 2

Dad & Mary arrived last Thursday, which is farm share pickup day. Last week's box included:
spring garlic
kale
arugula
green leaf lettuce
cilantro
dill
spinach
napa cabbage
bok-choi
radishes

In addition to the contents of our box, we also bought a bunch of peas at the farm stand. On Saturday morning we went to the Farmer's Market and bought more peas, some scallions, and haruki turnips. The Brookfield Farm stand was offering samples of the turnips and once I tasted them I just couldn't pass them up. They were so delicious raw and unadorned. I was happy to see that we got some in Week 3's box yesterday as well!

I have to admit that I didn't get too creative with farm share cooking this week since we had visitors. The menu included lots of salads (of course) featuring the arugula and spinach. I made veggie sandwiches on everything bagels for lunch that included (among other non-farm share things) green leaf lettuce, and thinly sliced radishes and turnips.

On Tuesday night I made Stir-Fried Bok Choy and Cabbage, and served that along with chicken and leftover potatoes from the clam boil. The greens were delicious! It looks like we got another huge bunch of bok choi in this week's box, so I'll have to do some searching to figure out what else to make with it.

We also had leftover clams and broth from the clam boil, so on Thursday night I made the best clam chowder ever. I don't think I will be able to use clam juice and canned clams again!

I saved the small bunch of kale from last week since I knew we would get more in this week's box (which we did). Since we still have peas left and got more turnips, I might make this over the weekend.

Happy eating!!!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

The context for this post is that S&Z started two weeks of daily swimming lessons in the outdoor town pool on Monday. The beginning of this week also happened to start with two of the coldest days of the summer!
