Christmas Day

On Christmas morning S&Z slept in until 8:30a because they went to bed so late on Christmas Eve. When they woke up they were very excited to find that it had snowed!

They also discovered that Santa had eaten his cookies, filled the stockings, left a few presents under the tree, and decorated the tree with candy canes!

What they (repeatedly) asked Santa for was a pair of slippers. Of course Santa obliged.

(Faithful blog readers may have noticed that there is a trend toward more pictures of Zoe than Silas these days. That is because Silas is officially uncooperative whenever the camera is out, whereas Zoe likes to ham it up a bit).

There's nothing like a little chocolate for breakfast.

The main Santa present was "My Own Leaptop" computers.

Unfortunately Santa's elves didn't test out the computers before putting them under the tree, and one of them was broken. :( Zoe and Silas share most everything in their daily lives, and we definitely didn't think they would have to share the main attraction on Christmas morning!! As usual, they were troopers.

Although ultimately we set a timer and had them take turns using the computer.

Good thing Grandpa Dave was nearby with his iPad to keep things interesting once they started to fight over the leaptop. Silas is really interested in time right now, so they loved watching the clock app this visit. He asks "what time is it?" countless times throughout the day.

There were also plenty of other gifts to keep them busy!

We skyped with my Dad & Mary mid-morning so that they could see the kids open their gifts. One of the awesome things they got were piggy banks with rolls of coins. I set up the iPad on the coffee table so that G&G could see everything!

After a busy and fun-filled morning the kids went down for a much-needed nap and Derek and I started cooking for the Christmas Day Mexican Fiesta. We wanted to start a new holiday food tradition this year and we debated a few possibilities, ultimately landing on a fajita bar. We marinated chicken and flank steak the night before in preparation for the grill. We made spanish rice, black beans, guacamole, grilled peppers and onions, along with all of the toppings for tacos/fajitas/burritos.

Denny was in charge of margaritas and we decided it was time to shut off the Christmas music and turn on some salsa! Everyone loved the food & festivities!

After dinner it was time for presents. Everyone is so generous with the kids and as usual they were all spoiled rotten.

By the end of the night everyone was exhausted. Zoe was just the most vocal about it :)

After Derek's family said their goodbyes we got the kids settled and they enjoyed a few books with Grandma. A perfect end to a wonderful holiday.

Merry Christmas 2012!!!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
