Random

Zoe and Silas decided to "wash" their hair with baby powder tonight. Those are fun times. I caught them early enough in the act that it wasn't a total disaster (as opposed to when Silas got ahold of the powder by himself a few weeks ago).

Many of you have heard me lamenting about preschool over the last few months. Our good news update of the week is that lucky number 10 got pulled in the admissions lottery on Wednesday night, which means that S&Z will be attending the community preschool program in West Roxbury this fall! The 3-year-old program runs Tuesday/Thursday from 8:45-11:15 and the 4-year-old program will be MWF from 8:30-12:30. I'm so excited for them (and for Derek to have some downtime)! First scary realization of the week: the amount we'll be paying for preschool this year ($2500) is what my annual tuition cost in the mid-1990s to attend university at a state school (and this is one of the least expensive preschool options in Boston that I am aware of!).

I just posted a photo for Day 31 and that means that I've completed an entire month of the 366 photo project! I'm so happy that I decided to do it! Unfortunately, due to the update above, I don't see an SLR camera in my future :-(

The NIH grant that I've been overseeing for the last 12 years is officially being re-funded!! It's an exciting and stressful time when starting a new set of studies that will run for 5 years. Scary realization #2: I'll be 42 years old when this project period ends...

I've been obsessed with cooking indian food for the last few weeks. Lentil soup, channa masala, curried chickpeas, dal, and spiced basmati rice to name a few. Yum yum!!

I have wanted to find a church to attend since S&Z were born, but apparently liberal Lutheran churches don't exist here. I've gotten two recommendations for an episcopal church in JP (Maryjane would be proud), so I'm hoping we can mobilize to check it out some Sunday in the near future. Our goal is to be regularly attending services by the fall so that the kids can go to Sunday School.

S&Z started singing the ABC song today, complete with "musical" (banging) accompaniment. So cute, I gotta get it on video. They are little sponges and are absorbing all this number-letter-color-shape stuff without it being pushed down their throats. Amazing.

I had to work this past Sunday, so I scheduled myself to have today off instead. At the last minute I decided to go to a movie instead of running errands when Julia got here at 2:00, but because I live in a bubble I don't know anything that's out right now. I quickly settled on "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" based solely on the solid acting lineup (Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock). Let me just say that I was not mentally prepared to cry for 2 hours today. I hope the amazing kid actor in the movie gets nominated for an Oscar, but holy.crap.I.am.emotionally.exhausted. I just wanted to run home afterward and hug my kids, which is exactly what I did. Until I the baby powder hair washing incident. Then I wanted to toss them...

Good night!

  1. I love the random updates! Keep 'em comin! Also, I read the book that the movie is based on when it came out quite a few years ago, and it really, really touched me. I'm pretty sure I cried while reading it.

  2. I figured that it must have been a book. I'll have to wait awhile before reading that one, I think!! Glad you like the updates - am excited to read Neighbors Part II tonight :-) MUAH!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
