Haircuts and Ambulances

Zoe got her first Aveda haircut at my salon this morning. She has had only the back and sides of her hair cut one time back in November of 2010, and she was starting to look VERY shaggy!

Because Zoe can be a little, well, high maintenance, we've been talking about this haircut for two weeks now. She would say "Zoe turn", "nip nip" (no sweetie, that something different; it's snip-snip), and "Randa do it" (referring to Miranda, who has been doing quick bang trims while Zoe sits in the stroller for a few months now). Every time we talked about it she would pick up a handful of hair and hold it straight up off her head. I was praying everything would go smoothly.

We scheduled Zoe's appointment coincident with my appointment today, and Derek brought them in when my cut was just finishing up. Zoe hopped right up on my lap and Miranda put a gown on her.

Miranda needed her to look down at times, so she handed me a Teen magazine (ugh) to show her. We looked at prom dresses.

Zoe did not say a single word during the entire haircut.

As soon as we were done she hopped down and grabbed her snack.

By the time we left the salon she was narrating the entire experience. Her new pixie 'do is adorable (we cut a solid 4 inches off) and I don't think it could've gone any smoother. It was a win for everyone, including all of the customers getting services done in the salon on a busy Saturday morning, who were spared the tantrum that very well could have been.

Next we went to the library to get another round of books. We've been going every 3 weeks and we check out about 10 books at a time. They really love going there, and they especially love getting new books so often! On our way out of the library we saw ambulance A17 parked in the square. Derek wanted to say hi and show off the kids, who in turn thought that seeing an "ambance" up close was the coolest thing ever!

The guys in the truck were so nice, when Silas said "lights on" they were happy to oblige. Zoe is so mad in this last picture because I turned the stroller around for a picture and all she wanted to do was see the lights.

A17 got a high priority call and so they took off in a hurry, complete with lights AND sirens...

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Parks

We decided to get Zoe's haircut on Saturday morning at a place geared towards kids called Snip-Its . Neither Derek nor I anticipated what a meltdown Zoe was going to have. The haircut is half-assed at best and Derek will have to fix it when she's more calm. We were so traumatized that we headed to the park to get the day going on a better foot! We went back to Larz Anderson, the park where the  Psychiatry picnic was held on Thursday . It is really close to our house and is lovely and shaded. I think it's one of my new favorite spots! The kids like it too :) S&Z love playing with wood chips, so there was a lot of that! Snacks were enjoyed on the bench and I tried to get a few pictures of the haircut... Excuse me, I'm chewing pretzels :) This morning we met up with Wendy, Dave, Sydney & Ivy at the Newton Center Playground. It was HOT HOT HOT, and there wasn't too much shade. The kids have inherited my low tolerance for heat, so they spe...

Sickness Update

We saw the pediatrician again this morning - it was our 4th visit in as many weeks. Both kids have an antibiotic-resistant sinus infection. Zoe also still has an ear infection after 5 days of meds; thankfully Silas' double ear infection is finally gone after the 10-day round of amoxicillin. While in the waiting room, we noticed that a rash had appeared on Silas' arms and trunk. Since this coincided with being on meds, Dr. Rundquist had to assume it might have been related to the amoxicillin. Silas was going to get a non-amox antibiotic for the continued sinus infection, and because it's easier to have them on the same meds they were both prescribed Suprax. Silas' O2 saturation was also down a little and he was wheezing during the exam. Apparently he also has broncholitis and he'll be treated with albuterol. He was given a nebulizer treatment in the doctor's office that he tolerated amazingly well at the end of a very long doctor's visit (we were there for 2 ...
