Our 1st Jack-o-Lantern

It would be an understatement to say that our lives have been a *little* crazy the last two October's (click here to see what we were up to in 2009 and here for 2010). Life feels a lot more manageable these days, so I definitely wanted us to carve a pumpkin this Halloween. My mom was flying back to North Dakota this morning, so we took the opportunity before her flight to carve Zoe & Silas' first jack-o-lantern!

First we had to come up with the vision and draw on the face,

Next we rolled up our sleeves,

And laid down newspaper.

Derek put the kids to work pulling out the seeds.

Daddy got to carving while the kids watched,

And lickety-split, it was time to check out the finished product!

Look, Gwa-wa!!!

We got cozy last night and lit up the pumpkin. Silas loved that part, and this morning asked "punkin on, punkin on".

We're also enjoying a refrigerator decorated with the last two art projects from our Sticky Fingers class.

It definitely feels like Halloween's that I remember in North Dakota as a kid - we got snow last night! We did lose power in the middle of the night. Because I sleep with a fan and am used to the sound of the baby monitor in the background, I woke up as soon as the house went quiet. Derek was at work so I went into high alert mommy mode. As I walked up to the kids' room to check on them (they sleep with a sound machine so I figured they woke up as well), all I heard was Silas say "uh-oh"... Other than that they were completely quiet, and I laid awake for 3 hours until it came back on. Derek got home at 7am and took the baby monitor - both the kids & I slept until 8am!

HAPPY NIGHT BEFORE
HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
