We are Almost 2 ! !

S&Z are just a month away from turning 2 years old and I can hardly believe it!!!!! Here are a few of our "big kid" developments:

-After showing some early language delays, they have so many words in their vocabulary now (even a few in spanish, including 'chico', 'niño', and 'tia'!). Both kids are putting two words together, and they consistently say bye bye and hi to many things (including 'bye bye, Mama' when I go to work, 'night night, books' before bed, and 'bye bye, pee pee' when we flush the toilet).

-After months of Zoe calling Silas 'Ya-ya' and Silas calling Zoe 'Ya-ya', Silas finally says 'Zoe' (pronounced 'zO-Oe'!). Zoe can say her middle name ('Lee') and is working on saying their last name too. Both kids call Julia either 'Ta-ta' or 'Tia', and Zoe can say Julia's daughter's name, which is Ira. She even knows that she should roll the 'r', but she can't quite do it yet so she separates Ira's name into 'e-a', leaving a space for the rolled 'r'. They call their playgroup teacher 'Diti' (Aditi) and give her big hugs every Friday morning at 'school'.

-They stand on stools at the bathroom sink to brush their teeth,

And wash their hands!

-When they play at the big kid playground at a nearby school, Zoe can climb the rock wall and she hangs from the monkey bars. Silas isn't quite as adventurous as his little sis is right now, however.

-They are picking up on counting, letters, and colors.

-They are so good at sharing most of the time. If one of them is upset, the other will come over with a cup of milk or a book, and give them a pat on the head or rub their back.

-Their reading preferences have shifted remarkably this summer. They have all of a sudden become much more interested in longer books and have very clear favorites, most of which are Dr. Suess books (right now it's "Hop on Pop", "Ten Apples Up On Top", "There's A Wocket in My Pocket" ,and "Dr. Suess' ABC"). They say 'hop' and 'top' over and over and over when they want you to read one of those books. They also love the "If You Give A Mouse a Cookie" series, and "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems. Since they are breaking up with their board books, I packed up a bunch to give away this week.

Bye-bye, board books :(

-Another big change is that we are adding more structure to their schedule this year. We will continue in the Friday morning EI playgroup, which includes art projects, a separation from parents, music, gross motor play, and circle time. We have a 7-week art class starting in September called "Sticky Fingers, and a 7-week movement and tumbling class starting in November called "Toddler Time". My parents are giving us a membership to the Children's Museum for S&Z's birthday, so we will probably be regular visitors on Sunday mornings when we are often on the hunt for fun family stuff to do.  I've got preschool for next fall on the brain, and have compiled a list of many places to check out!

They are so much fun as they are getting bigger, and life with twins is getting SO MUCH EASIER

As I always say, god bless development :)

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Parks

We decided to get Zoe's haircut on Saturday morning at a place geared towards kids called Snip-Its . Neither Derek nor I anticipated what a meltdown Zoe was going to have. The haircut is half-assed at best and Derek will have to fix it when she's more calm. We were so traumatized that we headed to the park to get the day going on a better foot! We went back to Larz Anderson, the park where the  Psychiatry picnic was held on Thursday . It is really close to our house and is lovely and shaded. I think it's one of my new favorite spots! The kids like it too :) S&Z love playing with wood chips, so there was a lot of that! Snacks were enjoyed on the bench and I tried to get a few pictures of the haircut... Excuse me, I'm chewing pretzels :) This morning we met up with Wendy, Dave, Sydney & Ivy at the Newton Center Playground. It was HOT HOT HOT, and there wasn't too much shade. The kids have inherited my low tolerance for heat, so they spe

York's Wild Kingdom

Friday was our last day of vacation and check-out time at Village by the Sea was 10am. We wanted to do one last fun thing before coming back to Boston, so we headed to York's Wild Kingdom in York, Maine. The zoo had just opened when we got there, and apparently lots of other families had the same idea as us! This zoo is definitely aimed for little kids, and Silas and Zoe (and Derek!) had a blast! Our first stop was the butterfly sanctuary, and this was definitely my favorite part of the day... We had the kids both in and out of the stroller throughout our visit. The zoo was packed with people, so it was a little nuts having them roam free and try to manage an empty double stroller too. But they were happier to get in and out of the stroller at their leisure with all the walking. There were several highlights for the kids - all of which involved feeding the animals from your hand. One was the duck pond, The deer were pretty awesome, As was the petting zoo
