Frequently Asked Questions

We get a lot of questions these days, so here are some of the FAQs!

Do twins run in your family?
Yes. I have twin cousins on my mom's side, my dad has twin cousins, and Derek's mom has twin cousins. Derek and I had discussed what would change if we were having twins, so this didn't come completely out of the blue!
Are they identical or fraternal?
They are "di-di" (diamniotic, dizygotic), meaning they will be fraternal. Since they each have their own placenta we know they came from two separate eggs. The odds of them being two girls is 25%, the odds of two boys is 25%, and the odds of a boy and a girl are 50%.
Will you find out the sexes?
Yes! Derek won't play the name game with me until we know what we're having! The ultrasound is scheduled for June 3rd. Stay tuned!!
What is your due date?
I am technically due on November 4th. Full-term for twins is considered 38 weeks so that puts us at October 21st.
How are you feeling?
I felt pretty darn good the entire first trimester compared to many pregnant women I know. I was really, really tired for a number of weeks early on and I continue to have nausea that comes and goes. Derek really stepped up and has been doing most of the cooking. I am now in my second trimester and I have heard that this is as good as it gets! I have been showing since I was about 10 weeks and I am a little worried about how HUGE I am going to get! Sure am glad I'm tall... Here's a picture of me at 13-1/2 weeks:
Will you be moving before the babies arrive?
Thankfully we have always said that we could start a family in our current apartment, and this plan has not changed now that we're having two babies. We currently live in a 3-bedroom. The "man cave" will turn into a small guest bedroom and the large back bedroom will turn into a lovely nursery for the babies. We have a washer & dryer and a backyard so we will be pretty well set!
Where are you delivering?
Brigham & Women's Hospital on Huntington Avenue in Boston.
Where are you registered?
We are in the process of registering at Babies 'R Us and Target. We will also register at Magic Beans in Brookline for stuff like the double stroller, Stokke high chairs, and other customized twin stuff.
How much maternity leave will you take?
I plan to take three months off from work. Derek has lots of PTO so he will take ~ three weeks off with us. It will be great to have time to figure things out together!

Are you both going back to work?
Yes, we will both continue working at the jobs that we love!
What will you do for daycare?
We can't possibly afford daycare in Boston for two babies, however, so we are "winging it" in some regards. Thankfully Derek's job has 3 different shifts, so he will be switching to the overnight shift this winter. He will do babycare 4 days per week, sleep in the evening when I get home from work, and work overnight. I will work 4 days per week, do babycare 3 days per week, and cover evenings and overnights.
Bottom line: We will need all the help from friends & family that we can get!!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Parks

We decided to get Zoe's haircut on Saturday morning at a place geared towards kids called Snip-Its . Neither Derek nor I anticipated what a meltdown Zoe was going to have. The haircut is half-assed at best and Derek will have to fix it when she's more calm. We were so traumatized that we headed to the park to get the day going on a better foot! We went back to Larz Anderson, the park where the  Psychiatry picnic was held on Thursday . It is really close to our house and is lovely and shaded. I think it's one of my new favorite spots! The kids like it too :) S&Z love playing with wood chips, so there was a lot of that! Snacks were enjoyed on the bench and I tried to get a few pictures of the haircut... Excuse me, I'm chewing pretzels :) This morning we met up with Wendy, Dave, Sydney & Ivy at the Newton Center Playground. It was HOT HOT HOT, and there wasn't too much shade. The kids have inherited my low tolerance for heat, so they spe

York's Wild Kingdom

Friday was our last day of vacation and check-out time at Village by the Sea was 10am. We wanted to do one last fun thing before coming back to Boston, so we headed to York's Wild Kingdom in York, Maine. The zoo had just opened when we got there, and apparently lots of other families had the same idea as us! This zoo is definitely aimed for little kids, and Silas and Zoe (and Derek!) had a blast! Our first stop was the butterfly sanctuary, and this was definitely my favorite part of the day... We had the kids both in and out of the stroller throughout our visit. The zoo was packed with people, so it was a little nuts having them roam free and try to manage an empty double stroller too. But they were happier to get in and out of the stroller at their leisure with all the walking. There were several highlights for the kids - all of which involved feeding the animals from your hand. One was the duck pond, The deer were pretty awesome, As was the petting zoo
