365: Day 341- Dutra Family Christmas Party

12/8/13: Derek's dad's side of the family has a longstanding tradition of getting everyone together a few weeks before Christmas. His grandfather was 1 of 12 children, and Derek's dad has around 40 first cousins - many of whom still live just south of Boston. The party has gotten so big over the years that they rent out a function hall for it. I've never gone before - this is the first year Derek didn't have to work. We headed down in the early afternoon today for some food, family, and fun.

The event is a potluck - I should have taken a picture of the spread! We brought Holiday Roll-Ups, a festive appetizer that was a little putz-y but turned out delicious!

S&Z were very excited to see Grandma & Papa,

And of course, KAYLAN!!!

They tried their first Shirley Temple (and both of them drank < 1/4 of it, reporting that it was "too sweet" and it "felt funny" on Zoe's tongue. Maybe we have missed the sensitive period for soda??!!)-

There was tons of running around and dancing until the games started. First they did the limbo,

And then musical chairs.

After the games SANTA came to visit!!!!!!!

There was more music and dancing before everyone said goodbye.

What a fun family tradition! I can't wait to bring the kids back next year!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
