We have had a busy and fun few weeks and I have several blogs that I want to write: Auntie Dana is visiting from Belgium, the babies were baptized along with their cousin Kaylan, and they rode the bus and subway for the first time over the weekend! The minute amount of free time that I have right now, however, has been spent BOILING WATER. If you haven't heard, Boston has been under a boil order since Saturday night. As if life with two babies isn't hard enough, we are now worried about and avoiding all tap water for drinking, bathing, etc.
Nick, an old friend from MN, was visiting me & Dana on Saturday night when we got the news about the water main break. Nick promptly set out on his bike to find us some bottled water and paper plates, cups, and silverware. By this point the stores were already selling out, but he managed to round up 14-20 oz. bottles of Aquafina. Here is what our very informal table setting for dinner looked like that night, complete with paper plates and plastic silverware.
Derek had a crazy busy night at work on Saturday night, with lots and lots of people calling 911 because they had "drank the water". After work on Sunday morning he set out on a mission to find us some bottled water. He got to BJ's just 5 minutes after they opened and there were already hundreds of angry people on the same mission. The store even had a security guard posted, anticipating a rush for supplies! Derek's perseverance prevailed, however, and he struck gold at a gas station on the way home. Rachel and Keith were in Worcester on Sunday morning, and after hearing that Boston had sold out of water, they also picked us up a few gallons. Sooooooo nice that they were thinking of us!!!
Initially there were no guidelines about whether or not it is safe to wash clothes. Yesterday we were running out of burp cloths and bibs, so Dana & I washed these things the old-fashioned way, in boiling water in the sink. Of course it just happened to be about 85 degrees and very humid, so I was very thankful that Dana was here helping me out! I told S&Z that she must love them VERY much :)
I think everyone is pretty over it after the last 48 hours. The pipe was reported to have been fixed last night and it takes 24 hours for the initial tests come back. Fingers crossed we'll be running the faucets safely by tomorrow!
