Midwest Travels, Part II

Ahhhhh, it was good to be home in Grand Forks this week...

Mom's gardens were in full June bloom and were absolutely beautiful.

The weather could have been a little nicer, but it sounds like that was true in Minneapolis and Boston this week as well! I did plenty of relaxing, a little bit of working (I have to present all of the Romanian ERP data from the 8-year follow-up at a meeting on June 30th...), and spent lots of good time with both Mom & Dave (and Ebony, who was up to no good one afternoon!).

Mom & I spent some time going through the cedar chest one morning. The cedar chest contains lots of family history, including baby clothes that are now being passed down to my lucky babes. I am even coming home with two christening gowns; one that Stephanie wore and one that I wore. Here is a sampling of some of the other clothes that will keep these babies well-dressed!

My Grandma Westerlund was an amazing knitter, so there are lots of baby sweaters, booties and bonnets. My Great-Grandma Fastrup was also a knitter so we are blessed with a bonnet and pair of booties that she knit for one of us girls as babies. In addition to some beautiful handknit pieces, there are also a couple of outfits that mom made for Stephanie and I as babies (see the denim overalls and the "HI" onesie above)! There was even an ADORABLE poncho with matching booties and mittens in the mix!!

However, coming from a family of females means that Baby Boy Dutra is getting the raw end of the stick when it comes to warm handknit baby clothes. I think Derek might object to me dressing him in sweaters with hearts or flowers on them. Instead, he suggested I dress him in a white onesie and "that should be just fine" :)

Thursday was Dave & Alissa's Day of Technology. He needed a new cell phone so we went and picked out a BLACKBERRY. "Uh-oh", is all I can say. Mom thinks he's on the phone a lot with business calls; now he can check his e-mail from anywhere, 24-7! After having lunch at La Campana, we spent the afternoon going over the wondrous functions of his new toy. It's a steep learning curve, but he's darn excited about the whole thing. Here he & Ebony are working hard with Outlook Contacts in order to get everything sync'd with the crackberry.

I also gave them a grandparents' present this week -- a WEBCAM!! Dad & Mary already have one built into their laptop, so I needed to get Mom & Dave outfitted as well. Skype + a webcam are absolute necessities for long distance grandparents these days. This way they will all be able to keep up on what the kids are doing and see how fast they're growing! Gotta love technology.

My time in Grand Forks ended up a fabulous dinner with Don, Cindy, Naomi & Amanda. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures, but it was wonderful to see them again so soon after the wedding and to hear about all of the good things going on their lives!

We drove back to Minneapolis today and I am VERY excited to see everyone at the babies first shower tomorrow!!!! They are already surrounded by love and they are not even born yet...

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Parks

We decided to get Zoe's haircut on Saturday morning at a place geared towards kids called Snip-Its . Neither Derek nor I anticipated what a meltdown Zoe was going to have. The haircut is half-assed at best and Derek will have to fix it when she's more calm. We were so traumatized that we headed to the park to get the day going on a better foot! We went back to Larz Anderson, the park where the  Psychiatry picnic was held on Thursday . It is really close to our house and is lovely and shaded. I think it's one of my new favorite spots! The kids like it too :) S&Z love playing with wood chips, so there was a lot of that! Snacks were enjoyed on the bench and I tried to get a few pictures of the haircut... Excuse me, I'm chewing pretzels :) This morning we met up with Wendy, Dave, Sydney & Ivy at the Newton Center Playground. It was HOT HOT HOT, and there wasn't too much shade. The kids have inherited my low tolerance for heat, so they spe

York's Wild Kingdom

Friday was our last day of vacation and check-out time at Village by the Sea was 10am. We wanted to do one last fun thing before coming back to Boston, so we headed to York's Wild Kingdom in York, Maine. The zoo had just opened when we got there, and apparently lots of other families had the same idea as us! This zoo is definitely aimed for little kids, and Silas and Zoe (and Derek!) had a blast! Our first stop was the butterfly sanctuary, and this was definitely my favorite part of the day... We had the kids both in and out of the stroller throughout our visit. The zoo was packed with people, so it was a little nuts having them roam free and try to manage an empty double stroller too. But they were happier to get in and out of the stroller at their leisure with all the walking. There were several highlights for the kids - all of which involved feeding the animals from your hand. One was the duck pond, The deer were pretty awesome, As was the petting zoo
