365: Day 263- Apple Picking

9/21/13: This morning we hit the gym before heading outside to enjoy Derek's day off. It's been just over 2 months since we joined the Y, so I wanted to take another picture of myself (see the first picture here). I am so damn proud of our commitment to improving our health and setting a good example for Zoe & Silas. It was another 13,000+ step day for me!

After our workout we went apple picking, joining thousands of other New England families on this gorgeous fall day. We headed back to Shelburne Farms in Stow, which is where we went last year (walk down memory lane with me and see pictures from 2012 and 2011).

The best part of our visit was definitely the hayride around the farm!

Then it was time to get to work-

There was plenty of time spent sampling different varieties of apples too!

This year we picked a 1/2 bushel. Boy is that a lot of apples!

20 pounds of apples!

We missed the neighborhood Farmer's Market today so we stopped at a farmstand on our way home. They had beautiful produce and I picked up tomatoes, nectarines, peaches, beets, "cheddar" (orange-yellow) cauliflower, red onions, and cabbage. The kids wandered around outside and looked at pumpkins while I shopped.

We had a fun day celebrating a great New England tradition!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
