365: Day 249- Honoring My Grandfather, Part II

9/7/13: After lunch we decided to explore some country roads and try to find the old farmhouse that my grandpa lived in as a child. It has been years (mid-to-late 1990's??) since any of us have been there so we had to get directions from the family who rents about 150 acres of surrounding farmland from us. We set out in a caravan of 3 cars...

After only one missed turn we found the farmhouse and outbuildings. Everything was far more overgrown than we expected.

We stayed just long enough to walk around and figure out that someone has stolen the 1960 Mercury that used to be abandoned inside one of the buildings.

The house my grandpa and his family lived in is pictured above and below.

We had a drink by the side of the road before we left, and everyone toasted my grandpa. He would have loved it!

We drove around for quite some time trying to find the country cemetery where my great-grandma's brother is buried, to no avail. We also drove by the farmhouse where Grandma and Ann grew up - it's in much better shape and a family currently lives in it!

Saturday was a day spent remembering and catching up.

This time with my family was a gift, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
