Today

Today I went to a yoga class for the first time in far too many years. It felt wonderful and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I can't wait to go back! Today Derek gave Silas his traditional mid-summer haircut. Today the weather was perfect and we enjoyed bike rides (them) / a walk (me) in the park after lunch. Today Zoe chased the cats until they succumbed to her love and adoration. Today I put the garbage on the curb for weekly pickup and realized that we didn't have any! We recycle and compost far more than we throw away. I am grateful to be able to teach Zoe & Silas these habits. Empty trash barrel Countertop compost bin  Backyard compost bin that we bought at Town Hall Food compost, including the hair from Silas' haircut today! Today I checked on the rooftop vegetable patio garden - it's doing great! Today we went school supply shopping so that I can enjoy the last month of summer without worrying abou...

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

What's for Dinner?

We skype with my Dad & Mary on Sunday nights, usually for about an hour. The fridge was wiped clean of of all leftovers (except for brown rice) due to lots of time around home this weekend, so we needed something quick and easy for dinner tonight. They love rice, so I decided to whip up some simple fried rice before our skype date. Of course both kids wanted to help... S&Z's "Yummy" Fried Rice 1 T. vegetable oil 2 scallions, chopped 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 c. frozen chopped spinach* 1/2 c. frozen peas 1 c. leftover brown rice Low sodium soy sauce or tamari, to taste *Usually I use steamed broccoli and/or carrots, but didn't have either on hand and wanted to keep it fast. Spinach packs such a nutritional punch, and it ended up tasting delicious! In a wok or saute pan, heat oil over medium heat . Add scallions and spinach; cook for a few minutes. Pour in beaten eggs and scramble with the spinach and green onions. Once cooked through, add the ric...

1st Annual LCN Halloween Party

Now that I am a parent I've realized that Halloween isn't what it used to be. Long gone are the days of trick-or-treating in random neighborhoods and eating candy from strangers. As my kids are getting a little older, I decided to turn to my community of friends and co-workers at Children's Hospital in order to start what I hope will be a new Halloween tradition. A crew of people from several of our research labs decorated the entire 6th floor yesterday afternoon in preparation for 25+ kids and their parents to descend for trick-or-treating at 4:00 today. For our costumes, Zoe was an angel, And Silas was a devil. Honestly, it would have been more reflective of personalities and temperament for the costumes to be reversed, but Silas wasn't too keen on wearing wings and a halo. I velcro'd the pitchfork to his back and was amazed he left the hat on as long as he did. Click  here  to see our costumes last year! A bunch of lab members baked ...
