365: Day 251- First Day of School, 2013 Ed.!

9/9/13: Monday was Zoe & Silas' first day of 4-year-old preschool!

We started the day off with pancakes and then we finished making their lunches. This year they will go to school MWF and they will eat lunch at school on those days. This is a big milestone for us!

Hummus and cucumber sandwiches, carrot sticks, peaches, apples,
and a few goldfish

I tried to get pictures of them in the same spot as last year, but the sun was shining in their eyes so they were squinting.

They were soooo excited to see all of their friends!

I took the day off, so Derek and I went to the gym and then got some groceries. Midway through shopping my phone rang and I saw it was the head teacher calling - this is the last thing any parent wants to see on the first day of school!!!! Apparently Silas fell on the playground (which, consequently, also happened last year!) and had a big scrape on his cheek. Because we don't get any face time with the teachers at pick-up she didn't want anyone to panic when they saw him :) Thankfully he was fine by the time we saw him.

I was so curious to check the lunch boxes when we picked them up. This was Silas' lunch box,

Whereas Zoe's still had her entire sandwich and half her carrots. I know that TIME is going to the biggest issue for her, and hopefully it will get better as the school year progresses. She ate the rest of her lunch on our way to JP Licks for ice cream.

All in all, it was a great first day of school!

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!
