As the kids have gotten older, they have naturally become incorporated into many of our household routines. The two routines that are the most fun for all of us are making coffee and putting away the groceries.
GROCERIES
You might be able to imagine the chaos that could ensue when trying to put the groceries away with two toddlers underfoot. Instead of treating this as a stressful time in the house, Derek decided to teach Zoe & Silas how to unload the grocery bags (did I mention that he has the patience of a saint?). Zoe in particular takes her job very seriously; Silas mainly likes to explore the various kinds of packaging and see what makes the best noises :)
I can't wait until they can start earning an allowance :)
COFFEE
I love coffee, but I didn't drink it for almost two years leading up to Silas & Zoe's birth. Derek's family is Portuguese and they take drinking coffee very seriously. Grandma Dutra talks about how her parents worked in a factory when she was growing up. When she & her sister, Doreen were in high school, their parents would have to leave for work before the girls were getting up for school. Doreen & Joanne would wake up to steaming cups of coffee waiting for them on their bedside tables.
I started drinking coffee the morning after we got home from the hospital with Silas. The babies were 6 days old. I could already see just a few days in that I was going to need some serious caffeine to survive what was in store for us.
Since I cover most mornings by myself (Derek doesn't get home from work until between 7:30-8am), I get the coffee ready the night before. Silas & Zoe have caught onto the routine and like to hang out with me as I get things ready.
In particular, they like the "shake, shake, shake" that goes along with the coffee grinder. I tried to take an "action" video with one hand and grind beans with the other, which did not work so well. This pre-grinding video will have to illustrate instead :)
