More Flu and New Beds

Silas has had a fever since yesterday morning, so it seems that he did not escape the flu bullet after all. Ibuprofen is barely putting a dent in his 103+ degree fever and he has not perked up today at all. He watched a few cartoons in our bed while Derek assembled the kids' new beds this morning. He was so sick that he didn't even want to help or watch. He melted down at lunch and ended up letting us put him down for his nap 45 minutes early. He was down for 3 hours but called me in there at least 10 times, just delirious and needing a hug or help blowing his nose. This is what he has looked like most of the day.

This flu has been misery for all of us, even though Derek and I have not gotten it. This is definitely the worst sickness we have weathered with the kids. I'm sure Derek was happy to go to work this afternoon. He's exhausted like the rest of us but at least he can watch the football game in peace tonight. I'm relieved that tomorrow is a holiday so that I will be home to help out again.

In other news, we finally figured out S&Z's post-crib bed situation. We have gone back and forth about this recently because we don't have a lot of space in their bedroom. Eventually we want bunk beds but they are still too young for them. Wendy ended up finding beds for Sydney & Ivy on Amazon for $59 apiece, so we opted to go the new toddler bed route. Silas won't comfortably fit in a toddler bed for more than a year or so, but these will be very gently used and we should be able to sell them for a decent resale price.

Zoe helped assemble one of the beds.

Then Derek took apart the cribs while I organized a few things. I can't believe how nostalgic I felt while we were doing this!

So much time, energy and money often goes into setting up a nursery. We were lucky to get our cribs from Eugenia pretty early in my pregnancy, and we had things all set up by the time I was feeling huge and uncomfortable. Retiring the cribs feels like such a big milestone, maybe because Zoe & Silas will be our only children and there aren't any other babies in our future.

Here is how the room looks now.

Zoe was all too eager to test her bed out once it was set up.

Silas checked his out briefly before going down for his nap.

Zoe took her usual 2.5 hour long nap with no problems at all. Before she went down she kept saying, "I love my new bed! I love my new bed!".

Poor feverish, flu-racked Silas before bed tonight.

Sweet dreams, guys.

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Today

Today I went to a yoga class for the first time in far too many years. It felt wonderful and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I can't wait to go back! Today Derek gave Silas his traditional mid-summer haircut. Today the weather was perfect and we enjoyed bike rides (them) / a walk (me) in the park after lunch. Today Zoe chased the cats until they succumbed to her love and adoration. Today I put the garbage on the curb for weekly pickup and realized that we didn't have any! We recycle and compost far more than we throw away. I am grateful to be able to teach Zoe & Silas these habits. Empty trash barrel Countertop compost bin  Backyard compost bin that we bought at Town Hall Food compost, including the hair from Silas' haircut today! Today I checked on the rooftop vegetable patio garden - it's doing great! Today we went school supply shopping so that I can enjoy the last month of summer without worrying abou...

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...
