Zoe & Mommy Day

A few weeks ago I reserved passes to the Science Museum as a fun way to end Zoe's VIP week. We've been talking about the museum all week, so it was such a bummer when Silas came down with a nasty cold+cough that necessitated his being seen by the doctor before the start of the weekend. Derek and I went back and forth about whether all of us should skip the museum, or if I should take Zoe without them. We opted for the latter, and Derek pulled one of the carseats out of the van so that he could take Silas to the doctor in the little car (we realized this weekend that it would be helpful to have a spare carseat installed in the little car so that we can split up once in awhile).

Silas was SUCH A TROOPER about missing out on the museum. [And let me say that if the opposite situation had occurred I am fairly certain that no one would have been going to the museum, because it just wouldn't have been worth it]. Derek took Silas out for ice cream after his appointment (it ended up he had a nasty virus that's going around, typically runs its course in 3 days) to try and make up for it. After they left the clinic Silas said, "I'm ready to go to the museum now!" :( :( :(

Zoe was a total pain in the A-S-S getting out of the house, but once she was in the car with me alone and on her way for what turned into "Zoe and Mommy Day" she was a perfect angel. I think overall her attention-seeking behavior might calm down a little if we did one-on-one outings more often. Derek ended up taking Silas grocery shopping this morning and I took Zoe on a few other errands - this was not possible before with only one car, so we are continuing to be really thankful to my parents for giving us my mom's car this fall.

Let me start off by saying that the Science Museum is AWESOME!!! Our Children's Museum annual pass recently expired, so I think we're going to get a S.M. pass instead.

Zoe ran around happily, holding my hand most of the time, squealing and pointing and chattering away about all of the cool things we saw. "There are a lotta lotta bones!!!!",

"And lions! And bears!",

"Look, they have toes! Like Mommy has toes and Zoe has toes and Daddy has toes and Silas has toes!"

There was a very simple microscope that we played with for a long time too.

And then it was time to check out "Mammoths and Mastadons: Titans of the Ice Age". This special exhibit starts out by making the connection between modern-day elephants and mastadons.

And then it was onto the "Shipwreck! Pirates and Treasure" special exhibit.

Finally, we stopped to see "To the Moon" where we could go inside the Apollo Command Module.

We stopped for lunch at the Riverview Cafe before we headed home. What a gorgeous view,

while Zoe fed me french fries and shared bites of her hot dog...

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Today

Today I went to a yoga class for the first time in far too many years. It felt wonderful and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I can't wait to go back! Today Derek gave Silas his traditional mid-summer haircut. Today the weather was perfect and we enjoyed bike rides (them) / a walk (me) in the park after lunch. Today Zoe chased the cats until they succumbed to her love and adoration. Today I put the garbage on the curb for weekly pickup and realized that we didn't have any! We recycle and compost far more than we throw away. I am grateful to be able to teach Zoe & Silas these habits. Empty trash barrel Countertop compost bin  Backyard compost bin that we bought at Town Hall Food compost, including the hair from Silas' haircut today! Today I checked on the rooftop vegetable patio garden - it's doing great! Today we went school supply shopping so that I can enjoy the last month of summer without worrying abou...

Food Prep

We recently bought a house and moved about 20 miles outside of Boston. One of the changes that came along with a new commute and work schedule is that I have started making dinner for the kids every night, instead of just Friday-Sunday (Julia, our wonderful long-time nanny, historically fed them dinner Monday-Thursday). Derek and I still have opposite work schedules, which means that I have the kids without him 5-6 nights/week. In order to make healthy meals AND pack lunches while flying solo, at a minimum I need to have a well-stocked fridge and basic menu plan for the week. Even better is when I can get some cooking and/or food prep done on Sunday. Before I go to the gym on Sunday mornings I usually peruse some recipes in search of culinary inspiration. Today I came across a recipe that caught my eye on Budget Bytes . I was planning on hitting Trader Joe's after the gym, so I picked up the frozen roasted corn that is the cornerstone of this recipe. The first part of my foo...
