Weekend Wrap-Up

I was so incredibly cranky last week that I knew going into this weekend that I really needed to relax and rejuvenate. On Friday I put my mind to resetting my bad mood and getting back on the right foot by Monday.

I will say that this is pretty easy to do when we have dance parties multiple times a day, whenever a particular song on Pandora strikes Silas' fancy.

On Friday morning we went to the library. Oh, how we love Library Day! We picked out a stack of new books that we've been snuggled up reading in Mommy and Daddy's bed all weekend.

Derek worked all weekend, so the kids helped me cook dinner each night. On Friday we made pan-seared chicken breasts, roasted brussels sprouts, and brown butter orzo. We had a giant stalk of brussels sprouts, so it was the vegetable that kept on giving all weekend long. Last night I mixed some with roasted cauliflower and tonight I mixed it with roasted broccoli. It's amazing what I can get the kids to eat when they have the enticement of Halloween candy for dessert :)

Our local Farmer's Market has been extended until the weekend before Thanksgiving, so on Saturday we went shopping for local vegetables. We got so much good stuff - harukei turnips, radishes, an assortment of heirloom potatoes, cabbage, acorn squash, rutabaga, winter turnips, parsnips, and broccoli. I am so thankful that we can still buy local produce this late in the season! This weekend was also Open Studios in our neighborhood, so we went to a church that was showcasing several local artists. I was so excited to find this unique clock for the kids' bedroom!

After lots of shopping and walking around we went to our favorite neighborhood diner. S&Z are so good in restaurants most of the time, and today was no exception. We had an awesome brunch together before Daddy headed to work.

When we got home I was organizing a reminder list on my phone using Siri. Silas in particular was pretty fascinated with this process. The kids spent the next hour playing with their phones, and for the rest of the day Silas kept asking "where's Siri?".

Last night was the end of Daylight Savings time, so S&Z got to watch "Curious George 2" and stay up an hour later than usual, in hopes that they would get on track with the time change this morning.

Today we got out for a morning walk to enjoy the beautiful fall weather, and then we collected leaves and played with sticks in the backyard.

I got the kids set up with construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, leaves, and a crumpled paper bag and they made the most awesome collages while I made lunch.

I laid down and actually fell asleep ALL 3 DAYS while S&Z napped.
I feel like a new person. Mission accomplished.

Silas' Blog

Well it's been a busy 3 years since I last posted! Stay tuned as we may have more posts coming now that it looks like I have a new contributor... Silas recently read a book called "Starting Your Own Blog", and now he is bound and determined for us to let him start his own blog! We convinced him that he should start out by drafting content and a posting calendar. We made templates this morning and he wrote his first "post" today!

Auntie Tracy's Visit

Tracy is one of my best friends, but I haven't seen her in person in two years ! This means that I hadn't met her daughter, Brynn, who turns 2 in June. I was sooooooooo excited when I found out that Tracy and Brynn would be visiting Tracy's sister, Timery this weekend. We decided to meet at Mall Tots  again so that the kids could run around and we could catch up. It's a 45 minute drive and it was a beautiful day, so the kids were hunkered down with sunglasses, snack and stuffed animals on the ride up. Zoe and Brynn initially got acquainted in the bouncy house, And then Zoe pushed her around in a car.   Of course my kids (and husband!) had plenty of distraction with the video games too. We packed up the kids and then had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading back home. Timery and Tracy are like sisters to me. What a fantastic day!!!

Go-To Crockpot Meals

A friend of mine recently purchased a crockpot and is looking for some good recipes. As usual, I am posting my favorites with links here! Slow Cooker Pulled Pork - this is best served with cole slaw on top or on the side. Our favorite is Mann's Rainbow Salad mix, to which we add sliced red onion and diced granny smith apple, dressed with a good store-bought cole slaw dressing. It really takes the pork to another level! Crockpot Refried Beans - I prefer to use black beans instead of pinto beans. You can do a lot with a pot of beans - one of my favorites is quesadillas or baked tostadas with caramelized red onion and cheese of choice. Chicken Verde - so simple, use a jar of Trader Joe's salsa verde and serve over rice. Spaghetti Squash Curry - a great side dish to use in place of rice. Chickpeas in Curried Coconut Broth - need I say more? The last one is delicious but I have no idea where I got the recipe - I don't have a direct link in Pepperplate, so I'm pas...
