It's amazing to watch how children learn about their world. We've been talking a lot about feelings for awhile now. Happy, sad, hungry, tired, and mad are the big ones lately. S&Z even comment on how they think Salvador is feeling, getting really close to his face and saying "cat happy". They are mirrors of each other's emotions and constantly label how they think the other one is feeling.
Learning about feelings involves being able to recognize different facial expressions (which is ironically the topic of the new 5-year grant I'm overseeing). Auntie Kristin gave us an awesome book by Jamie Lee Curtis that was a good starting point to these discussions. There is a facial expression wheel in the back of the book, where you can match various eyes and mouths to create different facial emotions.
S&Z have been asking us to draw happy, sad and mad faces for awhile now. A few days ago Silas drew one on his own for the first time!
Even though I study child development, I am in awe everyday watching it unfold before my very own eyes.

The mouth he drew was pretty flat, but he told us the face was happy :-)
