Today was S&Z's first visit to the public library. I love to read and have many memories of going to the library as a kid, so this is something I want to pass onto them as well. We have tons of books at home, but an infusion of variety into our own library sounded like a good idea. I decided to take the kids while Derek went food shopping this morning for Thanksgiving, because that was bound to take several hours.
Unfortunately the children's section of our neighborhood library branch is not enclosed in any way. Not even close. This is one of the reasons that I had waited so long to bring them. Two toddlers and one parent in these situations does not typically end well. I had some fantasy that they would be enamored enough with all the books that they might stay put.
HA! That lasted about 3 minutes (long enough for me to take these pictures).
And then they were off. Wandering around and exploring the adult section of the library was all fine and dandy, until they discovered the large computer area. Silas looked at me like he had discovered the emerald castle. When he sidled up next to the homeless guy, it was time to head back to the children's section.
You can imagine how well that went over.
I scooped them both up; Silas was SCREAMING, Zoe was SQUIRMING, and I was SWEARING (oops, freudian slip! that was supposed to say SWEATING, but I can guarantee I was swearing too, although hopefully in my head!!).
As I dragged them past the checkout desk, Zoe scooted out of my arms and headed off cackling toward the security gates. A judgmental middle-aged librarian was watching the whole scene. When she saw Zoe headed in the general direction of the door she said to her, "excuse miss, wrong way".
Not helpful, lady.
I wrestled Silas into the stroller and he immediately calmed down. There was no way I was going to leave the library without checking out a few books, though, so I threw 10 in my bag at lightning speed, wrestled Zoe into the stroller, and then headed to check them out. I smiled sweetly at the aforementioned librarian and said, "they're very 2".
Yea, I had fantasies of us going to the library every 2 weeks while Derek did the grocery shopping. Unfortunately I don't think we're there yet. This will definitely be a two-parent activity for awhile...
